We picked up where we left off in yesterday's discussion and began researching the seal of the United States. Luke was interested to learn that it often is used on many important official documents. We read and watched a video about this important American symbol and reviewed the meaning of symbols. We learned that The Great Seal of the United States is a national symbol that represents the country's independence, unity, and strength. We discussed what these words meant and Luke was prompted to provide examples to show that he understood the concepts discussed. He correctly identified the eagle in the seal and asked to "buy it" when we examined its image. I also briefly discussed that the US is made up of different states but that it wasn't always unified and that the term 'E pluribus unum' are words from a different language, Latin, but that it means "Out of many, one." I explained in very general terms it's a traditional motto of the United States that appears on the Great Seal and shows how America is one unified state made up of different states but all belonging to 'one great one'! Luke also enjoyed playing a game of baseball with two of his peers. He did an excellent job explaining the rules and the bases to his peers, showing the correct way to hold and grip the bat, run to bases and the basic goal of the game. Additionally, he displayed great sportsmanship, using mannerly terms, words of encouragement and praise, and offering water to his teammates and teachers after the game. It was quite a lucrative day!
