Unit 2- Poetry /characterization/ structure
Lesson Outline
We studied Gray's "Elegy in a Churchyard" and a sonnet by Shakespeare during today's session. Regarding the elegy, I first provided some definitions to archaic words and next discussed how to identify the speaker. We will continue to study structure next week. Next, we studied a Shakespeare sonnet. Joshua identified the major poetic techniques-alliteration and metaphor. I provided a definition of anaphora and explained its function . We then discussed the 3 metaphors that drive the sonnet's meaning, noting the two line couplet that resolves the question raised in the first three quatrains.
