Lesson Topic
Unit 2- Poetry /characterization/ structure
Lesson Outline
As our test on Unit 2 is scheduled for next Tuesday, during our first session I first reviewed on the board the functions of structure and figurative language in poetry. We then analyzed the function of the one stanza structure and of hyphens in "Thanatopsis" . Joshua did well in connecting the theme of unity with Nature with the single stanza structure. In that regard, we further noted specific language indicating the speaker's shifts in focus notwithstanding the single stanza structure. During our second session, we analyzed Donne's poem "The Sun Rising", an atraditional aubade. Line by line I provided instruction on literary apostrophe, diction, and Donne's dramatic metaphors , or conceits. Joshua then did well in discussing the speaker's apparent arrogance and self centered attitude in challenging the power and importance of the sun. We discussed how this apparent disdain can be positively interpreted as evidence of the speaker's devotion to his beloved.
