Unit 2- Poetry /characterization/ structure
Lesson Outline
We spent both sessions today focusing on writing an essay analysis of a poem by noting how poetic techniques convey meaning or the speaker's perspective. I first demonstrated how Joshua could rewrite his analysis of Gray's "Elegy" starting by drafting a topic sentence that addresses the question and identifies the poetic techniques that will constitute the evidence for the claim. I further demonstated how to describe, cite, and explain the use of imagery by referencing specific language that appeals to the senses. Likewise, I addressed the use of metaphors in the poem. During our second class, we examined Joshua's essay on "The Sun Rising" by 'Donne. Again, I provided writing and analysis instruction on forming a responsive topic sentence and explained how to cite evidence relevant to the claim instead of merely reciting words or passages from the poem.
