Lesson Topic
Extrema
Lesson Outline
We will do a review of chapter 2 for a few minutes as a lead in to chapter 3. Our new topic for today is extrema on a closed interval. We will define an extreme value as a local (relative) minimum, a local (relative) maximum, a global (absolute) maximum, or a global (absolute) minimum. Extrema can occur at the endpoints of the closed interval or at a point in the interval where f'(x) = 0 or where f'(x) is undefined. Examples will be done to demonstrate these concepts.
