Lesson Outline
Using the short story "Girl" we today discussed and studied how to infer character and setting from a stream of consciousness narrative. I first reviewed the characteristics of this form of narration and further reviewed the terms diction and syntax. Joshua then identified elements of syntax and diction that revealed the imperious and critical character of the narrator's mother. We then discussed how setting includes cultural values and explored how the passage revealed the rigid gender roles in the narrator's society. Last, we analyzed the text to glean a thematic message suggested by the stream of consciousness narration. Joshua did well in analyzing this passage in class discussion .
