Lesson Outline
Today I provided instruction on symbolic settings, and how contrasting settings can represent cultural or value conflicts. Joshua did very well in class discussing how the conflicting settings in "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan and in"The Great Gatsby" reflect conflicting cultural values . I next provided instruciton on how narrative pacing can create meaning or suspense. We discussed how Faulkner's lack of a chronological narrative conveys theme in "A Rose for Emily." Last, we examined Joshua's rewrite of his character essay on "The Open Boat" and worked on the role of commentary in an analytical essay. I provided examples of where and how to add commentary.
