Lesson Outline
We studied how structure creates meaning by studying a "closed structure" Italian sonnet. I reviewed how stanza structure is used to create a shift in perspective and meaning. We further explored how punctuation creates a caesura or pause that can be used to create a shift in subject or perspective. We then parsed a Browning sonnet paying attention to the function of the stanza break shifting in perspective from the speaker's personal devotion to the speaker's regaining faith or spiritual devotion.
