After I defined literary terms such as "theme" and characterization , I distributed a reading comprehension exercise that addressed plot, theme ,characterization, and textual support for conclusions . In order to assist Colson, I read the passage aloud after which he answered a series of comprehension questions. He did very well on the exercise noting how having the passage read aloud aided his comprehension .
