Unit 5 poetry
Lesson Outline
We analyzed D H Lawrence's poem "Snake" to explore how the poet uses allusion and personification to convey his complex perspective or moral quandary when the speaker confronts a snake drinking from his well. Stanza by stanza ,we discussed how the poem's personification of the snake followed by the poet's comparing the snake to a god and then a king conveys the speaker's moral dilemma as his instilled instinct to kill the snake struggles against his compassion for a living creature. We also reviewed Joshua's homework essay on the use of personification in Dickenson's "I could not stop for Death."
