After we completed reviewing a prior homework assignment from AP classroom, we examined the use of symbolism in poetry. I distinguished metaphor from symbolism and then distributed a simple short poem that employed symbolism. Joshua then identified the symbols and offered interpretations of the symbols. Using the same poem ,I provided additional instruction on the use of structure and punctuation to create meaning noting the use of poetic shifts signaled by hyphens ,the use of the word "but", and expressions/ punctuation as in "Ah!". Joshua will continue to work on developing interpretative thesis statements on the function of metaphor tonight.
