Lesson Topic
Unit 8- Poetry -Extended metaphor, symbolism, paradox
Lesson Outline
As Joshua will be reading Huck Finn over the break, we continued yesterday's lecture on the novel Huck Finn in order to provide context and literary guidance to assist Joshua's reading. (We will continue Unit 8 tomorrow).Today, I specifically addressed Huck's character metamorphosis with reference to events in the novel that signal a new or changing identity such as Huck faking his own murder and hence his rebirth, and Huck's ongoing name changes . We further discussed how Jackson Island is depicted as an Eden ,and hence the symbolism and foreshadowing of the snake bite. Critically,I emphasized the moral choices Huck is faced with throughout the novel, and what his choices evidence, a new and separate moral code than the conventional morality of society which somehow supports slavery and a religion that justifies slavery. Further, in this regard I noted how Jim, a runaway slave, becomes a father figure to Huck thereby shattering everything Huck has been told or taught about enslaved African -Americans.
