Lesson Topic
Unit 8- Poetry -Extended metaphor, symbolism, paradox
Lesson Outline
We explored the poetic techniques of apostrophe , metaphor, symbolism, and structure using Housman's poem "To an Athlete Dying Young.." As the poem is an elegy, we explored how the predictable regular meter and rhyme scheme function to mirror the predictability and inevitability of death. We then discussed how "runners running the road" illustrates the archetypal metaphor of life as a road. Last, we analyzed the speaker's ambiguity toward death as he on one hand applauds the deceased as a "smart lad" but then depicts death with ghastly images. We will continue with this next semester as we finish Unit 8.
