Subtraction
Lesson Outline
Libby and I began with a game to practice subitizing objects up to five. I quickly put a group of objects on her desk and covered them with a cloth. Then, Libby was asked, "How many are under the cloth?” This activity was to encourage Libby to recognize amounts without counting. Today's lesson was on solving subtraction word problems using the concepts of taking from and apart. Libby listened to stories, modeled quick pictures to show what was happening, and wrote equations.
