Today I provided instruction on literary archetypes. After defining the term ,we discussed Steinbeck's novel in the context of the "journey" archetype. David did well in identifying the critical plot events that represent Kino's journey .We then tied thematic ideas to the journey archetype discussing how the character encounters obstacles which alter the character's values. We further noted that Kino's wife becomes more assertive and Kino begins to recognize his wife's reasoning and values are superior to his. This led to a preliminary thematic interpretation of the novel : Love is more important than wealth.
