Unit 8 The Human Body Chapter 35 Immune System and Disease
Lesson Outline
35.3 Fighting Infectious Disease – We learned how English physician, Edward Jenner, deliberately injected cowpox disease which protected people from smallpox by building up immunities to fight the disease. We discovered how vaccines and externally produced antibodies fight disease. We learned how in 1900 more than 30% of deaths were caused by infectious disease, but in 2005 less than 5% of deaths were caused by infectious disease. This is due to public health measures dedicated to monitoring and regulating food and water supplies as well as vaccinations.
Assignment: Learn new vocabulary terms by looking up definitions for vaccination, active, and passive immunity in glossary.
