Lesson Outline
I got to know Emilia this morning, our first session together. She enthusiastically shared her summer plans, interests, family, travel, and her favorite colors, foods, and pets. We then got to work on a math skills assessment to gauge a good starting point to begin lessons with Emilia. Emilia then worked on a calendar skill activity , following directions well and demonstrating very good recall. when subsequently queried on the month, date and year. She was then tasked with answering questions about numbers and counting by two's. Emilia is right-handed and holds a pencil well. She filled in simple addition problems and asked to work on more problems, tackling adding two-digit to one-digit numbers. We used manipulatives to facilitate performance but Emilia subsequently was able to compute the problems in her head. When filling our answers on an activity sheet of problems, Emilia got the answers all correct. She reversed the ones and tens on two of the double digit numbers; however when asked to look over her answer, she self-corrected both without requiring additional prompts or assistance. Emilia used scissors as a component of another activity, holding them correctly and exercising good manual dexterity skills. Emilia enjoyed going outside for her break between classes and playing on the equipment with her sister. She enjoyed playing an interactive academic computer game for a few minutes at the end of the day which reinforced several of the the skills practiced today.
