Addition and counting by 4's using both single and double digits
Lesson Outline
We began with an addition activity for which I tasked Saskia to add nines to single digits. We then moved on to double digits, counting up by 4"s. I asked Saskia to demonstrate how she arrived at the sums, and allowed her to use the white board to demonstrate. We then progressed to double digits, counting up by 4's. I explained the strategy of starting with the higher number to begin counting up, and we practiced the skill. I made a game out of the computational exercises by drawing pictures out of the sums, which clearly delighted Saskia; in fact, she said it felt like we were not doing work at all and yet we enjoyed a very fun and productive session with many successful outcomes.
