Define and discuss the carboxylic acid group. Show the structural formula for the functional group and present it using molecular models. Discuss the acid nomenclature by using the root name of the alkane, removing the last e and substituting the letters OIC and then the name acid. Example: the acid from methane becomes methanOIC acid. Discuss the formula and properties of the first 3 alkane acids.
