Bar Graph: sorting; recording
Lesson Outline
Patrick used his trick-or-treating candy to create a bar graph. We brainstormed together to come up with a title and a focus question? (Halloween Candy Bar Graph: What kind of candy did I get the most of?) He sorted his candy into 12 different piles, counted each, and recorded the results in a bar. He answered oral questions of what he got the most of, least of, and ties. He made a reasonable prediction of how much he thought he obtained total. (100) He used a calculator to add up each bar and discovered his estimation was very reasonable. (118) We played "Fly Swatter" on the board to practice recalling each fact for a given sum. He "swatted" and erased the sum for each fact I called out. The second round, he erased the fact that matched the sum that I called out. While he knows most, he still misses a couple, that he knew previously, as well as remembered the ones he needed practice from yesterday.
