Today I introduced column addition. I modeled how the use of finding doubles or making tens with addends facilitate column addition. I discovered that Patrick needs to improve his fluency with doubles and making 10. We went outside to practice math facts on the court. We then made doubles flash cards for him to study at home. Lastly, Patrick analyzed some problems to determine if making a 10 or using doubles would help him find the correct answer. He was correct every time. With improved fluency column addition will be a breeze for him!
