Lesson Outline
Patrick and I reviewed number patterns with skip counting by 2's, 5's, 10's. Then I modeled problem solving steps with an exemplar. Patrick and I read the problem together looking for clue words and numbers and we read. Patrick wanted to quickly calculate the answer without drawing a picture and making a number sentence. Modeling, I continued following each step. As I worked Patrick wanted to revise his answer. We discussed how helpful drawing a math picture can be in word problems. Then Patrick completed a word problem his own. With minimal guidance from me (reminders to follow each step) Patrick was successful! Lastly, Patrick and I went out to the court to review mental math fact computation.
