In today's session we completed consideration of Chapter 5, focusing on the conflicts between westward expansion (facilitated by the land survey grid system) and territorial claims of native Americans (who, after all, were there first), the massive debt burdens of states resulting from the Revolutionary War, the inadequacy of the Articles of Confederation in providing a means of raising revenue sufficient to pay off such debts, and the importance in this regard of Shays' Rebellion.
