Today we completed discussion of Chapter 6, including the Federalist Party's program and the emergence of the Republic Party in opposition, the Jay Treaty with Britain, the Pinckney Treaty with Spain, George Washington's warning about foreign entanglements, the bitter election of 1796 won by John Adams, the Quasi-War with France, the Alien and Sedition Acts, the election of 1800 (in which Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied in electoral votes, leaving the election in the hands of the "lame duck" Congress), and the so-called midnight appointments of Federalists to judicial posts before Adams left office.
