Lesson Outline
Will and I began our class with a brief discussion of the topics covered in his English class with Kevin. Will iterated that he and Kevin had worked on punctuation, had read Hamlet, and had written a formal paper together. After explaining how I would structure our time together, I had Will read our course syllabus aloud. Together, we talked about student expectations and grading. Next, I had Will review some themes from the film "V for Vendetta," which was a nice starting point for my introduction to Alan Moore lesson. After talking a bit about the content of "V," I asked Will to consider what the author of this work might believe/look like given his writing. Will conjectured that he would probably be more liberal and anti-government minded, which was completely accurate. After this discussion, I had Will watch a 20 minute, autobiographical documentary titled "Monsters, Manics, and Moore," which provided a nice overview of Alan Moore's works, childhood, personality, beliefs, etc. Will seemed to enjoy the film and asked to watch more. After reviewing the film segments, Will and I had a healthy conversation about Alan Moore, and we verified all of our inferences while simultaneously discussing Moore's assertions in the film. Will was asked to provide a response on Moore's discussion that: "Anyone can be an artist; all it takes is application," and "Mankind is convinced it has nature under its control." Will's opinions were insightful, and we ended class with a brief reading of the first pages of Watchmen.
