Presidential History; segue to Civil War
Lesson Outline
Bobby worked collaboratively with another student for the first part of the session. He participated in a paired reading activity, and he read books about presidents, including a biography of Barack Obama. Using a map and globe, he located the states that the current and former presidents were born, and we talked the electoral process. Using currency, we discussed memorials and landmarks that were created to commemorate historical figures, and why we do so as a society. We also discussed the roles of presidents and their level of power and influence. For the second part of our session Bobby and I completed an introduction to the Civil War. He created a KWL chart regarding the Civil War and we discussed what he knows and what he wants to know. This activity gave me insight into his level and depth of knowledge regarding the subject. We talked about the following topics: Lincoln's election, slavery, succession, Generals Grant and Lee, northern, southern, and border states, undefined territories in the west, and Fort Sumter. Bobby explored authentic documents, and completed comprehension questions as well.
