We reviewed the three elements of a short story--beginning, middle, and end. Next we "share-read" (swapping pages) the short story "The Mystery of the Old Mill." I had Jackson jot down key (important) words as we read. The story was one of a Sarah Mansfield mystery series, Sarah is twelve, her mom is a cop and her dad is a poet. After we finished reading, I had Jackson use the key words as prompts and tell me the story in his own words.
