Lesson Outline
Gwendolyn and I reviewed what we learned last week. I will continue this pattern of morning review of vocabulary and concepts learned the week before to make certain that she understands and remembers the history we've covered. Today we learned about the U.S. census. We looked at real statistics, charts and demographics on the U.S. Government website and I showed Gwendolyn an example of Norman Rockwell's art (for her wall) of the U.S. Census taker on the cover of the "Saturday Evening Post". I quizzed her from the Horizons Activity Book "U.S. History: Beginnings" which follows our textbook. We continued reading in our text to learn about the next period in history, progressivism. We discussed women's suffrage, temperance and prohibition, workers' rights, and the start of the civil rights movement. We discussed changes in transportation - the Wright Brothers, Ford, the automobile and the assembly line, and the building of the Panama Canal. We also learned about Teddy Roosevelt.
