Needs and Wants
Lesson Outline
Today we began with a review of the calendar and the AABC picture pattern. We are really practicing yesterday, today, and tomorrow as these are tricky for Danny. Then, we continued in our new area of study by watching the Brain Pop Jr. learning video about needs and wants. We saw that we need shelter, clothes, food, and water. Then we saw that Moby the robot wanted a pet monkey, trampoline, pony, cupcake, and a computer! We talked about how these are things he'd like to have but does not need them to live. Additionally, we reviewed our FL Studies Weekly about needs and saw that people get jobs and earn money so that they may purchase goods and services that they want and need. Danny completed the activity page. He circled things that are "needs" in a field of pictures. I then read the meaning of "need" and "want" and Danny had to choose the proper word. He had to draw a picture of something he wants and he drew a robot! Danny completed his writing task from our previous session in which he copied the words of sorted needs and wants pictures. Finally, we watched a telling of the fun fiction story, Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type, by Doreen Cronin. In this amusing tale, the cows find an old typewriter and type a letter to Farmer Brown stating that they "want" electric blankets to keep them warm in the barn at night! They go on strike and refuse to give milk, along with the hens who now refuse to give eggs until they get blankets, too! The farmer "needs" the eggs and milk to run his farm. It's quite the dilemma of need vs. want! We then began a fun story booklet of our own in which we are writing in funny things other animals on the farm may "want".
