Calendar / Earth Day / Wants and Needs
Lesson Outline
This morning, we began with a new April calendar. We looked at the color pattern of the numbers for the dates. We marked out the days that have passed this month. Danny is able to state the days of the week (only needing a little help), but he has not mastered the skill of stating today, yesterday, and tomorrow. We completed a task in which we used a calendar with simple pictures and incomplete dates. We added in the missing numbers and answered questions by finding the items on the calendar. For example, the question asked when Earth Day was. On April 22, there was a picture of a globe. I explained to Danny that the “date” is made up of the month and the number that’s on that day. We worked through several different examples. We will continue to focus on practicing basic calendar skills. In continuing to discuss Earth Day, Danny completed painting his globe by adding Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. We completed an Earth Day recycling activity in which we looked at pictures of sorted recycled materials (bottles, plastic, paper, boxes, and cans). Danny counted each sorted item and colored in a bar graph to reflect the number of items in each recycle bin. He then decided which had the fewest and the most. We discussed recycling these items specifically by naming them (like milk jugs, soup cans, water bottles, etc.) and how it helps our earth. We reviewed wants and needs but discussing what each means. This is still a tricky concept. Danny enjoyed playing our needs and wants board game again in which he had to identify the pictures and discriminate as want or need as well as just stating a want or a need depending on the board space. We ended our time by reviewing the cardinal directions song and trying to point in the room to match the directions being said.
