Stanford Test Prep/Stock Market Game
Lesson Outline
We talked in general about preparing for a test. The importance of physical preparation related to proper rest, and diet/nutrition, were discussed. Also, mental preparation regarding positive thoughts were highlighted. Then, Stephen read the directions pertaining to the Social Studies practice section of the Stanford Test. Stephen scored 2/4 on the multiple choice practice questions. We went over each question together and I asked Stephen to talk through how he determined each response. I shared a test-taking strategy related to analyzing the stem/question and looking for key words and intent. Then, looking for ways to identify/narrow potential choices in order to determine the "best" answer. Then, we watched an introductory video related to stocks. I asked Stephen pointed questions related to his stocks in his portfolio related to profit and loss.

Stephen wanted to take some time to practice for the Stanford test. I shared pre-test preparation. I stressed that proper rest, nutrition/hydration, as well as, positive thoughts can impact your success on test day. Then, Stephen read the directions and answered the 4 practice questions. He answered 2 of 4 correctly. I shared a test taking technique as we discussed the results. I asked Stephen to describe how derived each answer. I told him to carefully read the question and look for key words and phrases in the stem. Then, ways to narrow choices in order to identify the "best" answer related to the intent of the question/statement were highlighted. We spent about 7 minutes watching an introductory video about stocks and I asked Stephen to comment on profit/loss related to stocks in his portfolio.
