Lesson Outline
This morning we worked in Danny's Geography textbook. We looked at various types of maps such as a city, bedroom, park, and classroom. Next, we moved into several activities using a map key (a symbol representing something on a map). We matched pictures of a restaurant, airplane, bridge, and mountains to the symbols that could be used on a map key for these items. We also analyzed and used the map keys of maps for a natural world area (forest, lake, river, and mountain), city (bike shop, gift shop, candy store, library, and fire department), park (picnic, playground, parking, and restroom), and a zoo in which we labeled the animals and talked about how to go from one animal to another. We practiced reading a map key with a fun treasure map activity in which Danny had to follow the directions including coloring specific items, labeling the compass rose, and determining what cardinal direction an item is in respect to another item. For example, the waterfall was north of the treasure chest. We also completed a landforms review in which we sorted pictures (such as valley, hills, river, and ocean) as to if they are land or water. Finally, we enjoyed a learning video about continents and oceans. We saw each continent and the basic structure of Earth with the two hemispheres. We learned that Antarctica is cold and frozen. Asia is the biggest and has the Great Wall of China, which Danny declared, "whoa, it's so big!" We saw that South America has the Amazon rainforest and Australia is a country and a continent and is home to the Great Barrier Reef. Finally, we saw Africa, which has the Sahara Desert and is the continent Danny said he'd go visit.
