Lesson Topic
Russian Apple Cake / Sharlotka
Lesson Outline
This week completed our time researching the culture of Russia. Yanuell chose to bake a traditional apple cake, Sharlotka, typically eaten this time of year as apples are in abundance. This cake was also one of the only desserts with fruits, since for many, apples were the only type of fruit preservable over winter. Yanuell began by dicing 4 large apples and placing them in a greased baking dish. In the mixer, he beat 4 eggs and 1 c. sugar until light and fluffy. Then 1 c. flour, 1 t. vanilla, 3/4 t. baking soda, and 1/4 t. lemon juice were beaten into the egg mixture until well combined. The batter was poured on top of the apples and placed into a 350 degree oven. While the cake cooked, Yanuell watched videos about the history and interesting facts of Russia. Yanuell was very excited to take the cake home for his dad and I am hoping it was cooked through and enjoyed.
