Lesson Outline
This afternoon we continued our exploration of ecosystems and how the introduction of an invasive species can have a profound impact on both the living and non living elements within the ecosystem. We observed a case study in Ghana that highlighted how the massive die off of phytoplankton offshore can create massive eruptions of hydrogen sulfide gas and methane causing a chain reaction through the food web. A very interesting cause and effect relationship showing how phytoplankton death results in increased poaching and hunting of game creating an unbalance in the ecosystem. Notetaking and discussion followed.
