Lesson Outline
Loulie counted to 29. She then wrote numbers 1-15. She practiced filling in the blank when it came to counting. For example: -, -, 3, 4, -, -, -, 8, -, 10. Loulie identified a circle, square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, and an oval. She then drew each one. Loulie counted pictures with 1 - 15 objects. She circled the correct number of objects, given three choices. She counted objects, such as "hearts," and answered the question, "How many hearts?" She circled a specific amount of objects. For example, "Circle 10 ice cream cones." Loulie then focused on ordinal numbers, counting from first through fifth. I assisted her with "sixth." She followed directions such as, "Circle the third bird," and "Underline the fifth bird." Using plastic teddy bears as manipulatives, Loulie was able to identify the group that was greater/bigger/more and the group that was less/smaller/fewer. We talked about the meaning of addition (putting groups together). I drew a group of 3 circles and a group of 2 circles. She filled in and then read the equation "3 + 2 = 5. Loulie completed several similar problems. We followed the same procedure with subtraction. We talked about what it means to subtract. I then drew 6 circles. I told her to "take away" one circle. She crossed off one circle. She then completed the equation "6 - 1 = 5. She then read the equation... "six minus (or take away) one equals five.

Lesson Comments
When Loulie was counting, she asked me what came after 29. I told her, 30. She then counted to 39, asking me what came after 39. I told her, 40. She then counted to 49. This continued through 79. Loulie was an absolute pleasure to work with!
