Lesson Topic
Empire State Building / The White House / Magic Tree House
Lesson Outline
Today we continued on with our Florida Studies Weekly of American Monuments. We read more about the Empire State Building and watched animated video of its construction. We read a passage with facts about the building and Danny answered follow-up questions. We learned that it took only 410 days to build and that was at the time of the beginning of the Great Depression. The building was completed in 1931, is 102 stories, and 1,454 feet high. It was the tallest building in the world for many years. They put on special lights during celebrations and events and people can get married on the 80th floor on Valentine’s Day! To follow up our study of The White House yesterday, we completed a flip square activity for Danny’s Interactive Notebook. On each of the four flaps, Danny wrote four facts about The White House. Finally, we finished up our Magic Tree House book, Hour at the Olympics, by Mary Pope Osborne. Danny was interested in helping read some of the words in the book today! We read about how they used the secret book to call for help. A beautiful white horse with a chariot appeared to take them out of the stadium and then it transformed into Pegasus and flew them to the treehouse. Morgan Le Fay explained that it was a piece of Greek mythology and is now a constellation in the sky.
