Lesson Topic
Nouns of places and prepositions
Lesson Outline
Our lesson today began with a review of greetings and salutations; then moved onto an introduction of 18 nouns of places and 10 prepositions.
15 minutes - Elle and I reviewed the greetings and salutations. I read them and she modeled them. I then asked her a greeting or salutation, in English, and she gave me the corresponding French phrase. Elle then read the list of greetings and salutations to me.
90 minutes - In order to make the learning experience interactive our lesson on nouns of places and prepositions will be a project. We began with the activity I prepared of nouns of places in the form of a page that is laid out like a city. I read the vocabulary and Elle modeled words like: church, post office, beach, library, etc. We then went to the supply closet and Elle chose the color of construction paper she wanted to create her own city which she is calling “Elleville”. Elle copied the 18 nouns of places into her spiral notebook. She then began finding images of each on the internet, copied them, cut them out and glued them on her “city” (construction paper). I prepared the name in French on graph paper (one letter in each graph box), cut it out the word, and gave it to Elle to glue the “image” for the corresponding French word.
To reinforce the new vocabulary, we continued reading the list of nouns as we worked. Then I ran a youtube lesson on “the city” and Elle found the word from her list and repeated it. This was done as she continued to find “images” and glue them to her “city”.The project is now 20% complete. We will continue at our next lesson.
Our last 15 minutes of class time was used in repeating the 10 prepositions and forming sentences. The prepositions were purposefully chosen to correspond with nouns of the city. They were: on the right; on the left; in front of, behind, near, etc. Elle repeated the words, then using the “city” map she had created thus far, we identified the location of the building in sentence format. Example: The library is to the right of the post office; the church is to the left of the post office, etc. As she completes more of her city map, we will continue using the prepositions to form more sentences identifying the location of each building.
Elle did very well today. She was motivated and excited to “create” her own city. She caught onto the directions quickly and began doing “her own thing” finding images. As the lesson progressed her pronunciation of the French vocabulary began to show improvement. She also became familiar with the new vocabulary and was able to use many of the words without “looking up the meaning” on her worksheet.

The time moved quickly and Elle was surprised when I told her time was up.
