First Day of History Class!
Lesson Outline
What a pleasure it was to begin the day with Amira today! We taught each other in a reciprocal lesson. Amira provided me with her background on previous social studies learning - from time spent in Scottsdale, Cincinnati and Miami. I explained to Amira that 8th grade social studies curriculum is American History. I will get Amira a book ASAP. Amira shared that she wants to be a marine biologist and we discussed how her new home is perfect for her aspirations! Amira has already visited Loggerhead Marine Center and loved learning how they rehabilitate injured turtles. Amira tought me about megaladons who resided in FL waters millions of years ago. She was excited to learn that Juno Beach has the 2nd largest turtle nesting area in the world. Amira also learned about manatees today and that they are a special, protected FL marine life species. We looked at local turtle nesting areas on line. It will be wonderful for Amira to learn about the history of our area. Not only is the oldest city in the US in eastern FL, there is incredible history re: Native Americans, the Civil War and so much more here. Welcome to history class at the Batt School, Amira! I look forward to working with you!

Lesson Comments
At the end of first period, I tried to introduce Amira to as many scholars as possible. I asked Elle to take Amira to her room so Amira could get some decorating tips. I taught Elle 2nd period, too, so the beginning of 2nd period was especially fun and animated.
