Today, Sam read the novel "El viaje de su vida" for 20 minutes (we reviewed the last pages 1-2 and continued reading 3-4 and 5). Then she completed information about her reading activity. I explained "reading logs" are extremely helpful. Is a great opportunity to identify new and recycled vocabulary (connecting meaning) It demonstrates growth in reading level, comprehension, and higher-level thinking. Sam is having so much fun and feels very confident about her reading skills in Spanish. When we find a new word while she is reading aloud in the class we stop and talk about the meaning and examples in context(taking time to connect the new word with the novel and using real examples for Sam). Sam understands by doing this reading activity she will develop new strategies to enhance reading comprehension, locate unfamiliar words in a story and determine their meaning using a variety of strategies (e.g., prior knowledge from the dictionary and connecting context clues). Also, this will improve acquiring new vocabulary and enhance understanding of new vocabulary by making connections to related ideas and other words (aim to use new vocabulary in speaking and writing). Sam is having fun while reading in Spanish.
