Chapter 19: The Progressive Era
Lesson Outline
We started discussing the Progressive Era and the reforms that were made during this time period. We reviewed the concepts that are relevant throughout American history: 1) natural resources, 2) democracy, and 3) discrimination. Because of modern printing methods, books, newspapers, and magazines were widespread. Muckracking journalists helped to expose corruption in business, government, and industry. Upton Sinclair's The Jungle was an important novel exposing the unsanitary practices in the food industry. I read Cam an excerpt from the book about the unclean practices in meat packing plants.
