Lesson Topic
GABA AND GABA RECEPTORS
Lesson Outline
Discuss the paper which was read by Nina last night. This included what is gaba, how does gaba work, what is the relationship of gaba to glutamate, what medical conditions are associated with changes in the level of gaba, and what medications target gaba.
View a diagram of the gaba receptor with its allosteric sites and discuss how and why benzodiazepines and barbiturates act.
Discuss inhibitors of gaba metabolism which results in agonism with the major effects of gaba secretion. These are calming, anxiolytic, lowering stress and fear, muscle relaxation.
discuss the effects of gaba agonists. List how different Benzo's produce different effects, sometimes based on dose. These include sedation, hypnotic effect, anxiolytic effect, and muscle relaxation.

Virus particles
Lesson Outline
Discuss how virus infections are the number one infections worldwide in terms of morbidity and mortality.
List reasons for this high rate, especially in underdeveloped countries. These will include poor public sanitation as well as lack of vaccines and expensive drugs for treatment.
Using diagrams, discuss the anatomy of the virion and how pharmacological treatment is designed to interrupt some physiological processes, like reproduction, in order to kill or control the replication of the viral particle.
