Lesson Topic
Newton's third law-systems
Lesson Outline
The test on chapter 6 was graded and a few missed questions were discussed. The homework assignment was evaluated and answers were questioned for more detail. The concept of a "system" between forces was outlined and sketched. This was done to show that Newton's third law applied only when one of two or more forces was outside a system. You can't push s stopped car from inside by pushing on the dashboard, both forces are internal and cancel.

Lesson Comments
This lesson required a variety of diagrams, the explanation of each one leading to the presentation of the next. At the end, it all tied together, and it appeared that Abby understood the concept.

Lesson Topic
Newtons third law
Lesson Outline
A restatement of Newton's third law started the class. Examples of action forces were presented and Abby was requested to name the reaction force for each. The single, underlying force of friction was indicated as the reaction force in many cases. Problems involving the free fall of a rock (action force) with the reaction force being the rocks attraction to the Earth. Why we don't "feel" the Earth moving toward the rock was presented, using the second law equation to answer the question. The usual example of a cannon and cannonball was also presented.

Needed a lot of "coaching" today to arrive at answers. Once there, it was good. I'm not sure why cannons and cannonballs are still used in todays modern textbooks, must be passed on from prof to prof.

chapter 6 test-begin Newton's third law
Lesson Outline
The test on Chapter 6 was given. Abby was given some time to review her notes before the exam due to her absences during the pasts 2 classes. The exam was finished and parts of it were discussed and explained. Newton's third law was related to forces which act in opposition to each other on a system. The statement of Newton's law was written, and will be examined more closely in the next few classes.

Abby required a little explaining of some questions, but once clarified she proceeded to finish the exam. The opening part of the third law was cut a little short by "birthday cake"

Components of Vectors
Lesson Outline
I gave Marcel a first-day bonus test to check some of his physics understanding. His performance earned him 4 extra points on the first actual test he will take with me. I then discussed with him the choice of a textbook and we decided to use the Holt text provided by our school instead of the book he used at his previous school which he complained about. We then started to discover what topic to begin Marcel's physics education with, taking into consideration what he has already covered in his previous classes. We decided to start with components of vectors and we did a few problems. There was no assignment.

air resistance, friction and free fall explaination.
Lesson Outline
Review the topic of friction as a force, the measurement of and direction of action. Determination of net force when thrust and friction are given, as well as air resistance being a form of friction. The determination of the acceleration of a heavy object and a light object being dropped from a height, and showing that both have the same acceleration due to the ratio of force to mass in free fall always equaling the gravitational force of 9.8 Newtons. The idea of terminal velocity being reached when air resistance equals the weight of the object due to acceleration no longer increasing was presented and discussed.

Lesson Topic
lab analysis, and friction
Lesson Outline
Review results from Wed. Lab dealing with constant force, changing mass and acceleration. Discuss results and graph mass v acceleration. The type of graph was analyzed and the affect on acceleration, a is proportional to the inverse of the mass was seen. The force due to friction was outlined, as well as the homework questions answered.
