Using Greek mythology in contemporary story-making
Lesson Outline
Josh and I reviewed a film that incorporates a lot of Greek mythology in a contemporary setting. We noted how much of the myths apply to today's modern life. We also reviewed a flash fiction that Josh wrote, in which he embedded three layers of humor.

Lesson Comments
Josh loves to relate short stories and film narratives. He is going to find some stories he has written for, and been accepted for publication on, the Creepypasta web site. I think I can help him develop his writing and thinking to a higher level with his own stories.
We used several ideas from Josh's story trailers on his phone as a springboard for discussing various elements of writing in general and story-telling specifically.

Lesson Comments
Josh is very bright in a variety of topics. He is reluctant to write what he knows, though. I think perhaps pen and keyboard are not his preferred methods of communicating, but with some work he could be a real good orator.

Lesson Comments
Josh is very enthusiastic, and is interested in a variety of subject matters. I think that with a lot of study and practice, that after college he could possibly be the host/creator of TV's first channel devoted to short stories. I know I'd certainly watch him!
Using commas; writing summaries; and short stories

Josh wrote a summary of a short story, and we used his work to review how commas are used. We discussed mythological themes and various genres of writing, including both modern and early American writers, such as Edgar Allen Poe. Josh is very creative and alert to how early writing applies to contemporary life.
Assignment

Josh is capable of capturing the plot of an article or story in succinct terms. He can recall what he has read in vivid detail, and his vocabulary is at least on grade level, if not above.
Reading skills, and writing in logical sequential order
Lesson Outline
Josh read aloud stories in the horror fiction genre that interested him. He discussed the plot and characters of the stories, and then re-wrote each story on paper, using only the most salient aspects of the stories. We worked on his punctuation and writing in complete sentences. His logical sequencing is good.
Assignment
He will write a short story using the lessons learned in this session.
