Emma had attempted a few of the free response questions in the cumulative AP Stats Practice Test in her book and felt very uncertain of what she was expected to write and how to express it. I showed her the solution and went through each part of the question and we outlined the points she that any statistician would be expected to discuss when comparing two data sets. We paid close attention to the conventional format of the writing including terminology, composition and technical parenthetical references.

Emma reproduced the assigned proof, but with some errors. I corrected her mistakes and we talked about where her reasoning was flawed. Afterward, Emma was able to reproduce the proof on her own.

One of the AP Practice Test questions in Emma's book asked for the values of statistics of a data set which had been transformed by multiplying a constant and adding a constant. The only given information were the original mean and standard deviation. Rather than simply memorizing the rule, Emma and I worked through a proof that the new mean will be transformed in the same way that the original data values were transformed. I also showed the proof that the new standard deviation will be the original standard deviation multiplied by the constant.

Lesson planning, Emma went home sick.

We spent the majority of the session narrowing down the survey questions for Emma's course projects by eliminating those which would be measuring similar or same phenomena and those which would not help us to test our main hypothesis. Later, we worked on AP Practice Test questions based on Chapter 2 material.

We continued perfecting Emma's survey questions and planning her method of data collection, including initial recording, data entry, design of data frame, survey structure and wording of questions, etc. We also reviewed more of the AP Practice Test questions.

We went over Emma's assigned standard deviation problem. She had completed it without difficulty and seemed to fully understand the process and the meaning of standard deviation. We spent the remainder of the session working on designing her survey for the course projects.

We first discussed Emma's homework assignment, then reviewed standard deviation. We worked through an example using the formula with a small data set. We solved the problem using two different approaches. I assigned a similar example for her to complete as homework using both methods.

We covered the last few questions in this section that needed exploration and clarification.
