Review Oscar Wao, Abelard Chapter and Writing Assignment
Lesson Outline
1) Georgia and I review the events of the Abelard Chronicles in Oscar Wao, and continue reading until we get to "The Fall" chapter.
2) Writing Assignment: Responding to the text. Yunior prompt the question of whether or not the events of the Abelard chapter are attributed to a fuku, or not. In your opinion, can bad things in life be attributed to curses, or bad luck? Explain your reasoning with examples from the text.
Georgia will be able to: 1) Determine whether two triangles are similar; 2) Find sides and angles of similar triangles.

Georgia did well this morning. She wasn't feeling well near the end of our session, but she completed an assignment and participated when I was teaching new material. We also had an issue with the internet that caused a disconnection for a few minutes.
Continue with income taxes - itemized deductions or using tax rate chart
Discuss number of exemptions claimed - will you owe taxes at the end of the year, or get a refund - if you have more taxes taken and get a refund at the end of the year, is this a good thing? Why/why not? You are doing without your money for the year, and in effect, letting the government use your money interest free. Then explain property tax -assessed value versus market value and what is the property tax rate set by the local government? Complete even #s exercises A, B, and C

Georgia worked very well, however, she had some problems with computing, putting the decimal in the correct place. For example, if tax was $1,345.80, she might say $13,458.00. But by the end of class, she was making fewer mistakes. She is very nice and I enjoy working with her.
Georgia often tries to do mental math but she makes mistakes because she doesn't know the basic facts. She also often answers before thinking and says things that don't make sense. I want her to get to the point where she can understands numbers so well that she can give answers quickly and correctly.
Georgia will be able to: 1) use the multiplication rule for exponents to simplify expressions; 2) use the rule for raising a power to a power to simplify exponential expressions.

Georgia did well. She did really well on the first assignment but struggled a bit on the second (only on the toughest problems).
1) Read Part 2 of Oscar Wao pgs. 200-223
2) Discussion Questions: What is the time period in which this section of our story is written? What does this suggest about this section's content? We have been presented with several characterizations of Trujillo; El Jefe the violent oppressor, ruthless ruler, etc. What "face" of Trujillo are we presented with in this section? Abelard, Lola and Oscar's grandfather, is an Alpha of Intellectuals. Can Intellectualism coexist peacefully with oppression?
