Performing the experiment seemed to go a long way in helping Charlie grasping the concept of the doppler effect. He asked for more such experiments as we introduce other Engineering topics in the coming weeks. He also asked questions in order to prepare of Friday's quiz.
Presented amplitute and frequency of sound waves. Also included light waves. Showed how the speed of sound depends on the density of the medium it is traveling thru. Also cover reflection of sound waves.

Charlie completed his homework assignment and demonstrated he has a fundamental understanding of Archimedes Principle. He really seems to enjoy building the aircraft model.
Defined Archimedes' Principle for floating and submerged bodies. Worked out one example together in class and assigned one similar homework problem (due Friday).
Reviewed the course outline for the rest of the semester.
Assignment
Provide definition of Archimedes Principle and perform a water displacement calculation.

Charlie showed much interest in the subject and aked pertinent questions. I did have to review with him the formulas for area of a circle and volume of cubes and cylinders.
Lesson included introductions to one another. The many fields of Engineering were introduced. For example, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, etc. Then we reviewed Newton's 3 Laws of Motion and discussed examples of each.
Assignment
Review Engineering websites and report back with interests.

Lesson Comments
This first session went very well. Charlie seems to have a strong interest in Engineering. He was a willing particapant and asked many questions.
We completed our discussion of what thermodynamics is, the first law of thermodynamics, an adiabatic process, how an combustion engine is an example of these types of systems, and the process that a combustion engine goes through.
We finished the model engine, however there were some pieces that did not work as well as they should, but it still shows how a combustion engine works. Then, we spoke about what is going on and how it is an example of the first law of thermodynamics (in particular and adiabatic process).
