Unit 10 Organisms and Their Environment
Lesson Outline
Lesson 1 – How Do Organisms Change with the Seasons?
We learned how animals change with the seasons. Animals such as the arctic fox changes colors to blend with their surroundings making it easier to stay hidden while they hunt. Then we learned about animals that save energy in an inactive state called hibernation. Next we learned about animals such as manatees and humpback whales that regularly move from one place to another and back in a process called migration.
Lesson 2 – How Do Organisms Obtain and Use Food? – We learned that animals including humans, cannot make their own food so they eat plants or other animals. The energy stored in the food source is passed to them. Next we learned that nutrients help you grow and give you energy. Then we defined the terms: photosynthesis, producer, consumer, and decomposer. We learned that when plants make their own food it is called photosynthesis. The process requires sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide from air. Photosynthesis produces sugar for the plant to use or store and oxygen released into the air. Since plants make their own food they are called producers in the food chain.

Lesson Comments
I presented potential areas of study for Stephen for today and next week. I mentioned watching "All the President's Men" related to Watergate and drawing parallels to what happened in the run up to the Presidential election and the "speculation" of collusion and a possible cover-up involving the White House. I also mentioned a continuation of the topics from Brainpop. Last, I have a DVD series, "America, The Story of Us. Stephen was most intrigued by some of the episodes in the DVD series. He chose an episode and we read a summary that highlights what is covered. We also read discussion questions that we will go over together post-viewing. I stressed that I want Stephen to actively watch and listen for information that apply to each question that will allow him to develop/embellish in his responses.
