In this activity, Will took 100 dollars that earned 12% interest for the year. Will then took 100 dollars and determined how much money was earned at 12% compounded monthly, earning interest on the interest.
Will continued to work on my eighteen-problem test which included simplifying radical expressions, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing radical expressions, and solving radical equations and checking for extraneous solutions. He did not finish today so he can continue the next time we have a session. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Will was concerned that he would not finish the test today but I assured him that because the problems were difficult that there was no obligation to finish today.
I was happy to hear that Will enjoyed his visit to Lynn University. He shared a few details and he talked about the fact that it would be a lot different when he is there in the fall as a student. In our session today, we completed our discussion about stereotypes. He explored the differences between a “stereotype” and a “generalization’. He also took a quiz on the article he read abut stereotypes earning a 100%. I decided it would be best if he started the novel study right away due to its length. Therefore, we will be continuing our media unit along with the novel study. We began by exploring the genre of “memoir”. He read a description of the genre and annotated the description. For homework, he is reading up to page 31 and writing paragraph responses to two questions from Part I in which the author describes what led her to write the memoir.

Speed, F-stop, and ISO -
Will and I engaged in a conversation about how photographers learned their craft prior to the digital age. We discussed how they would choose film with light sensitivity, selected for the project at hand. They used light meters to determine the amount of light for each exposure to determine the aperture or “F-stop” and adjusted the shutter speed on the spot. We then reviewed the ways a digital camera addresses these concerns in an automatic manner, and how to work without the auto function. We examined a series of photos and discussed how certain effects were achieved. Will took a test on vocabulary.
Will continued to work on his test. He worked on problems including multiplication, division, and simplification of radical expressions. He also found the inverse of a given function. We agreed that Will would probably finish the test next Thursday. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Will had no trouble working through the problems with the review he had.
In this activity, Will reviewed factoring techniques with a=1. For the main purpose of the lesson, I wanted to show Will how to factor the difficult trinomials where a>1. This involves using the cast out method.
Will finished his practice test on rational exponents and radical equations and began his real test. He worked on problems including integers raised to positive and negative fractional powers, radical expressions, composite and inverse functions, and radical equations. He did not finish the test yet. There was no assignment.

Speed, aperture, and ISO -
Will and I reviewed the importance of ISO (light sensitivity), shutter speed, and aperture. We examined how these three settings on a camera can make a difference. We then tested his auto settings and compared the general auto setting to the pre-set options available on his camera. We took portrait photos, to compare the results of using different settings. We then took photos of moving objects and investigated the benefits of a motor drive and single shot settings. Finally we used his telephoto lens and compared settings for landscape and floral images compared to the general automatic setting. Homework: rename the photos from today. Study new vocabulary.
