Maya was introduced to 6 new vocabulary words: sprain, stretcher, Search and Rescue Team, ambulance, x-ray, and hospital on quizlet. As an introduction, she practiced listening to the terms pronounced and typed in what she heard. We read the definitions, made connections, and gave examples to her life. She independently read The Day I Needed Help. We stopped and discussed what was happening as we read, and made and confirmed predictions. We talked about many events that occurred and the cause/effect relationship. She did great making sense of what happened and explained why.
Maya and I read information text to learn about our Earth's hemispheres separated by the equator and prime meridian. Maya was excited to learn about this topic, as she was introduced to the equator last year. She grasped the concept that the prime meridian is another imaginary line dividing the Earth into two equal halves. She just has difficulty remembering that term, but is able to give an explanation to it's purpose. We blew up a balloon to represent the sphere shape of the Earth, add used sharpie to label the above vocabulary. She also identified them on a globe. She identified the Northern, Eastern, Southern, and Western hemispheres as an assessment on a daily quiz. Maya practiced singing the "50 states" that rhyme. She needs help remembering Oklahoma, Washington, NewMexico, South Carolina, and South Dakota. Other than that, she has them all mastered! I am impressed as this is typically a skill practiced in 4th grade, but her passion for learning new facts and concepts carries her far.
Maya finished adding details to her writing piece about experiencing the birth of a puppy. Through conversation, she shared many descriptive details. Ex: Dad tightly tied a piece of floss onto the umbilical cord. Following completion, we went back and edited together, as well as made revisions based on more descriptive details in conversation. She began typing before narrating it to me as I typed it for her, add selected font style and color for the title. Maya enjoys working on Microsoft Word and is able to independently. It would be beneficial for her to take keyboarding as an elective at some point. :) She shared her published piece with Judie and some of her peers.
In math class, Maya continued to practice counting money. We did not go into the next lesson because I felt she needed to brush up on certain skills such as identifying each coin by tails or heads, identifying the value of each coin, counting coins, and using various coins to represent the same value (1 quarter is equal to 2 dimes and a nickel, 2 dimes and 5 pennies, or 25 pennies). Maya was able to demonstrate this idea more easily after practice with manipulatives and reading a book about coins. Maya will continue to practice these concepts until she has mastered these skills. She also completed a daily review and a 3X table drill. Maya should continue to practice her 3X table flashcards. In Fast ForWord Maya used her knowledge to beat her high score in Tomb Trek, a game where she is required to match written words to their spoken words. Maya began V/V class by following our routine with the Picture to Picture step. She gave a full description of a kangaroo and bunny picture. Then I put the picture away in order for her to create her own mental image. Then she proceeded to the next step in our V/V program, the Word Imaging step. Maya took a quick glance at a picture of an ice cream cone. Then she engaged in an activity where she had to change her picture into words. Anytime she was was unsure, she was able to look at the picture again to elicit further detail. Then she ran through his structure cards to ensure she gave a full description. Maya did a great job!
Maya was introduced to 6 new vocabulary words: admire, passion, splendid, concentrate, ache, and _____ on quizlet. As an introduction, she practiced listening to the terms pronounced and typing in what she heard. We read the definitions and made connections/gave examples to her life. Maya made a list of people she admires and passions that she possesses. I alternated reading The Boy Who Cried Wolf. We stopped and discussed what was happening as we read, and made and confirmed predictions. We talked about the lesson the character learned. It's tough for Maya to give a general explanation, but gave a very specific description.
Today Maya took a 3x table practice drill. She was very eager and chose to do the 50 facts, as opposed to the 25 facts. She completed this drill in 7 minutes today. She was very proud of her efforts, as she only began to learn these yesterday. We invented a few ways to remember some of the more tricky facts. Maya completed today's daily review, a cumulative review. In today's lesson Maya practiced counting money with play money. When she is practicing counting quarters she can count to 50 cents, but often forgets what comes next. We will continue to practice this skill. It is also tricky, now, for her to switch money increments (count from a quarter to a dime or nickel), but again she will have many opportunities to master this skill. In Fast ForWord Maya played Paint Match and beat her high score! She also played Tomb Trek. Great work today, Maya!
