Piper Austin
Session Date
Lesson Topic
Business Calculus
Lesson Outline
We discussed Integration, basic integration, integration by substitution, and integration with exponential functions of base e. There are a few more types of integration concepts that we need to work on next week, but I want her to practice what we did today, review her differentiation, and try to identify why and when we use certain types of integration rules. The most difficulty students have with integration is not understanding differentiation thoroughly, and confusing the two ideas.

Business Calculus
Lesson Outline
We went over her last exam and the problems that she had issues with. She made some basic errors, and then there were a couple of problems that were more difficult, so we went through the concepts involved with those and answered those questions,
She should practice differentiation of all types of functions (more complicated types of derivatives).

Test review
Lesson Outline
It was great to see Piper again! We reviewed the principle concepts for Piper's upcoming test (I understand she will be taking it next week, when school resumes) by working through a set of problems. Piper is a very bright student, and is very quick to understand the gist of the questions. I very much approve - and I told her! - of the fact that she works through the problems by writing everything down. She also has a very intuitive and analytical understanding of the math involved. A good class!

Extra credit assignment
Lesson Outline
It was so nice to meet Piper today! We looked at the assignment for the extra credit project that Piper is working on, and we reviewed the concepts of forces (gravitational, centripetal, normal, etc), momentum, acceleration, and velocity in conjunction with four of the different rides offered as examples to work on. I think that by the end of our session, Piper was more optimistic about tackling the project, and I'm sure she'll do absolutely fine! I look forward to seeing her next week when we'll review the work she will have done for the assignment.

Lesson Comments
It's obvious that Piper is a very sharp student, and is very eager to understand physics better. Once we looked at the assignment and broke it down into steps, and once Piper understood what was required, she appeared to relax a bit - I think initially she found the task quite daunting.

Review
Lesson Outline
We went over concepts involved in her midterm tomorrow (force in two directions, projectile motion, etc), and did some sample problems with her leaving more comfortable with the information.

Homework
Lesson Outline
Piper had some homework to complete. We were able to complete the majority of the problems, but some of them were worded pretty poorly and made it difficult to know what her teacher was looking for.

Review for test
Lesson Outline
We went over a few concepts that she will see on her test tomorrow. We went over the concepts behind Newton's 3 laws, and did a few examples dealing with free body diagrams, and net forces (normal force, force due to gravity, force of static and kinetic friction).

Newton's Laws of Motion
Lesson Outline
We went over Newton's three laws of motion. We looked at a few examples to understand these concepts more. I explained how to draw a free body diagram and use it to calculate net force and acceleration. We spoke about an object in equilibrium and friction force.
